About the Project
This project involved the planning, design, and production of a multi-page terrain atlas integrating advanced relief visualization techniques with professional publication standards. The atlas combined a series of terrain visualization exercises into a cohesive print publication emphasizing visual consistency, typographic hierarchy, and high-quality cartographic presentation.
The project consisted of two primary components. The first involved the development of eight distinct terrain visualizations (some of which are included below), each demonstrating a different method of representing terrain and relief. These included contours and spot heights, hypsometric tints, false-colour image enhancement, enhanced hillshade, filtered hillshade, Imhof-inspired relief, Blender-generated terrain visualization, LiDAR-derived relief, and an artistic cartographer’s-choice representation.
Each visualization was prepared to professional print specifications at 220 ppi and 100% scale with a final trim size of 6” × 9”. Particular emphasis was placed on maintaining visual clarity, tonal balance, and cartographic readability across differing terrain representation methods.
The second component focused on the design and production of the atlas itself. Individual terrain visualizations were assembled into a cohesive publication using Adobe InDesign, with attention given to consistent margins, bleed, page structure, and overall visual flow. The atlas incorporated section-based pagination using Roman numerals for front matter and Arabic numerals for main content sections.Custom graphic elements and recurring layout motifs were developed to establish a unified visual identity across the publication.
Strong emphasis was placed on publication design principles, including typographic hierarchy, layout consistency, and document-wide formatting efficiency through the use of parent pages and paragraph/character styles. Custom graphic elements were also developed for the front and back covers, as well as select interior pages, helping establish a unified visual identity throughout the atlas.
One of the primary technical challenges involved ensuring that all terrain visualization outputs were produced at specifications fully compatible with atlas production requirements while maintaining consistency across multiple visualization styles and workflows.
